Stained Glass Lead Knife

Overview

I had to choose a craftsman and develop a tool for him. I worked with a stained glass artist to redesign his leading knife.

The project was developed hand-in-hand with the artist, testing each iteration in his workshop and refining the form around how he actually works.

The blade is plasma-cut stainless steel, polished by hand. The handle is CNC-machined hardwood held together with functional brass rivets.

The bottom of the handle has a metal insert used for knocking in the nails that hold the glass window together during assembly, while the wooden edge gently taps the glass to pack it tightly into place.
